Teatro Real of Madrid wants to express its deep sorrow and consternation because of the passing of Gerard Mortier, befallen yesterday night, 8th March, in his residence in Brussels. The death of Gerard Mortier is a great loss for the Teatro Real. He carried out exceptionally his work as Advisor and Artistic Director since January 2010, contributing to impulse significantly the operatic and cultural panorama of Spain, and placing the Teatro Real as one of the reference lyric theaters in the international context. Teatro Real will dedicate this afternoon's performance of Alceste, by Gluck, where a minute's silence will be observed in his memory, and the flags of the Plaza de Oriente façade will wave half-mast high as a sign of mourning. A Tribute Act is also being organized, where the youths will have a prominent presence, taking his legacy as great driver of the opera as an art which is opened to our times and the new audiences. Gerard Mortier passed away last night because of his illness, surrounded by his closest family. The funeral ceremony will be done in strict intimacy, as he wished.
